Notice deadline

Also called Action deadline, Cancellation deadline

The notice deadline is the last day you can give notice to stop or change a renewal: the end date minus the notice period.

Why it matters to a budget owner

The end date tells you when a contract stops. The notice deadline tells you when you lose the choice. For an auto-renewing contract, only the notice deadline belongs in the calendar, with a review a few weeks before it.

Renewal reminders set on the end date are a common reason companies renew contracts they meant to cancel. The reminder fires after the window has already closed.

What to record

  • The end date of the current term
  • The notice period
  • The resulting deadline, and who reviews before it

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I miss the notice deadline?

On an auto-renewing contract the next term usually starts on the stated terms. You can still ask the vendor for flexibility, but they are not obliged to agree.
